CPT codes 19081-19086 have an exerpt in the lay description (On the Optum EncoderPro.com website) which states, "The physician takes five or more cores of tissue from a single lesion to obtain a sufficient amount of tissue for diagnosis." However, in the CPT 2014 Updates audio-conference, an example given in the presentation shows a biopsy of one lesion with "Four 14-gauge biopsies performed" under U/S guidance are reported using 19083. Is this a situation similar to the 8-minute rule for timed CPTs or is one of these sources mistaken? Thanks in advance for any info provided!

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. What I think it means is that because the needle biopsies are so minute, the MD takes, in this case, 4 specimens of that lesion.
