Has anyone ever heard of appending modifier -22 to 92980 if the physician inserts three or more stents in the same vessel?

You can only use the code once per vessle, no matter how many stents you use.

I understand we can only use 92980 once.But if the physician puts three or more stents in the same vessel can modifier 22 be appended?
I don't think so as the rule is you can only use 92980 once per vessel regardless of how many stents are inserted in the same vessel. My co-worker thinks that a 22 can be appended due to the additional work.

You can, but the document should clearly reflect the complex or "unusual" effort of the procedure. Also, depending on the payor, it may not result in any additional revenue. I certainly agree that three stents in the same vessel is unusual, but your payor may not. It may need to be filed with a description of the procedure.

(this opinion does not apply to non coronary stent placements).
