What is the correct diagnosis code to use for screening osteoporosis with CPT code 77080? We have been using Z13.820 but was told to use Z78.0 instead is this something new?

Thanks

The correct diagnosis would be the diagnosis that corresponds to the reason for the test that was documented by the physician who ordered it. If they're saying it's a screening for osteoporosis (patient has no symptoms or condition for which a diagnostic test was needed), then Z13.820 is correct. It's possible that some payers may want to know that the patient is post-menopausal in order to support covering the test, in which case Z78.0 may be appropriate if it's supported by the record.
