I work in a GI office and we get a lot of referrals for colonoscopies with a diagnosis code of abnormal CT scan. I am trying to clarify which dx code to use, 793.99 or 793.4. Of course one is a payable Medicare code and one isn't. Any input from anyone? Thanks for any help with this.

Abnormal CT scan is pretty nonspecific. I'd ask the offices to start providing more detail about what is actually being imaged. In my office, for abnormal CT scan of the GI tract, we use 793.4 and for abnormal CT scan of the abdominal area, we use 793.6. We've never used 793.99.
