Hi! This is a question that has been floating around my office as of late.
I code for an urgent care and occasionally we'll have a patient who needs to be seen for a "routine" STI screening. No signs or symptoms. No relevant history. Patient does not *admit* to any associated risk factors (confirmed/suspected exposure, unprotected sex, needle jab, etc.) Like, truly nothing.
I've looked at other codes outside of the standard office visit codes such as 99401-99404 & 99000 and I don't believe those are quite right either (based on our providers' documentation at least)
Just curious if others see this type of visit and if so -- especially in the absence of medical necessity -- how would you/your workplace code it? Do you reject the encounter? 99212 with a Z- screening code?
Thanks! Hope everyone is having a nice week
