We continue to have questions from our physicians regarding the use of 99211,The latest situation in which the physicians would like to use this code involves vaccines and the administration codes attached, namely 90460,90461
In this situation the parents have requested a "staggered" vaccines, many times for 2-6 months(babies) they want 1 vaccine at a time and make a new appointment for another one and so forth. When they come back in for the next vaccine, the physician adds to the documentation that they are on this type of vaccine schedule and then they add that they have counseled the pt/parent on the risks and benefits of the vaccine. They at that point add the 99211 to the charge as well as the 90460. Is this appropriate?

Thank you

No it is not appropriate to use a 99211 for an injection encounter. The provider evaluation is not significant or separately identifiable from the injection administration.
