Provider is looking for some clarification on BMI Diagnosis usage for when a child's percentage and actual BMI do not match the diagnosis to use. Example: Child has a BMI of 22 which is consider normal but the percentage is 97%. So how would that work to put a diagnosis code with a child with normal BMI, but the percentage indicates overweight? Any advice would be appreciated.

BMI code assignment does not make any assumptions or involve any interpretation about what is or is not normal. The provider would need to document the associated diagnosis (e.g. underweight, overweight, obese, etc.) and the coder will assign the appropriate codes for the condition and the BMI that is documented. ICD-10 does not classify any particular BMI as normal or abnormal - that is a clinical decision only - so there should be no conflict or problem in doing this.
