We have a non certified tech, our md's want to have her perform nerve conduction studies and emg's. Can she?

Medicare has the following supervision / performance requirements for the technical component of...
EMG studies - Procedure must be performed by a physician or a physical
therapist (PT) who is certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) as a qualified electrophysiological clinical specialist and is permitted to provide the procedure under State law; in addition, the PT with ABPTS certification may supervise another PT, but only the PT with ABPTS certification may bill.

NCS - = Procedure must be performed by a PT with ABPTS certification or by a PT without certification under direct supervision of a physician, or by a technician with certification under general supervision of a physician; in addition, the PT with ABPTS certification may supervise another PT, but only the PT with ABPTS certification may bill.

In addition, you should check your state licensing boards as often there are state requirements regarding training & certification, particularly for needle EMG studies

I agree with marvelh, there are also some state regulations regarding the extent of the work that could be done by a tech. The tech could connect the electrodes and run the test for example, but it might be a requirement that the doctor read the results. In NJ for auto claims it's actually required the the doctor be present to monitor and interpret the results in real time, and that NCS and EMG can not be done in separate sessions. It's definitely a good idea to check with your state and your carrier to make sure.
