My question is when does cancer become personal history,also does the certain type of cancer is it different,breast, colon etc.?

I read something on this just the other day but do not remember where.

It stated that when a patient is longer longer receiving any type of medications, treatment, etc is when you would result to the history codes. If the patient is still taking oral medications, then you still code the cancer code.

If I find it again, I'll post it.
Hope this helps

Our doc's use the V code for personal history of cancer when the patient is considered to be in clinical remission. This might not necessarily mean they are not taking oral medication- for instance, in the case of breast cancer survivors who may take oral medication for years after their treatment. But, it depends on the medication- there are pills for active treatment of cancer and then there are pills for long term use after treatment.

my understanding of cancer history codes is exactly what mbort wrote... (though, I can't find it now either). But to code history is to "no longer be receiving treatment for and no longer has".
{that's my opinion on the posted matter}
