Wiki coding inpatient consults

What cpt code can we charge when a specialist admitted a patient of ours
and consulted us to see patient in the hospital?

I am very confused, the primary doctor cannot be called as a consultant. Do you mean you are the patien's primary care physician or are you the primary physician of record for the admission? these are two different things.

If you're the admitting physician for a medicare patient, you continue to use initial hospital care codes 99221-99223 but now must append modifier AI

99221-99223 have always been called "admit codes" because traditionally they were only used by the admitting physician.now we just have to forget about the term "admit codes" because more than one physician is now using these codes sets for two different services. (admission vs. consult)

reinforce "initial hospital care" those codes have always been called initial hospital care and it means just that -- initial care, first encounter -- both admitting physicians and consulting physicians are using these codes. physicians of different specialties called in for consults, also use 99221-99223. so now instead of just the admitting physician utilizing these codes, more than one physician are using them.

just remember modifier AI for the admitting physician -- if this modifier isn't appended correctly, payment for any physician may be affected.

If you are the patient's primary care physician and the principle physician for the admission then it is not an admit nor a consult your visits are all subseqent inpatient.

CMS does not accept the consult codes but some of your other carriers may.
We checked with our top 10 carriers and found out which ones would accept the consult codes and which of those that were not going too.
This was most helpful.
