We are having a debate in our office on the correct diagnosis code for a pregnant patient with constipation. Some agree on O99.61x, K59.00 and the others say constipation should not be coded this way because it is not a digestive "disease" and should be coded K59.00, Z233.1. Does anyone know the correct way to code this?

Thank you!

From ICD-10 Coding Guidelines..."Should the provider document that the pregnancy is incidental to the encounter, then code Z33.1, Pregnant state, incidental, should be used in place of any chapter 15 codes. It is the provider’s responsibility to state that the condition being treated is not affecting the pregnancy."

Also from ICD-10 Coding Guidelines..."Obstetric cases require codes from chapter 15... . Chapter 15 codes have sequencing priority over codes from other chapters. Additional codes from other chapters may be used in conjunction with chapter 15 codes to further specify conditions."

Complication code as per above guideline per cfordCPC and if you look in the book under O99.6 states it is for conditions in K00-K93

Hi GG,
Yes code it dx 099.61 and K59 is the best + correct way to code this situation. Incidental pregnancy is used if patient comes to physician for a medical problem then later finds that on this visit she is pregnant. Then add Z33 on last claim.
