Hi!

This is a good one

I have an MD who is a specialist but does particpate as an Internal Medicine MD on a rotation for hospital rounds. This MD would like to know if he is the attending and the patient has an issue regarding his specialty can he be attending and consult physciain at the same time?

Any takers? I did say no but of-course I need to back up in writing.

Any thoughts?
 
That is a good one. I haven't heard of someone wanting to consult himself before! I would say that if he is attending the patient, he should just be addressing and treating the issue that he has found that is within his specialty, whether it is "Internal Medicine" or not. He treats them for what he can.
 
I have a physician who practices gastro and IM. Why physicians do this, is beyond me - the only response I could ever get was "I couldn't decide what specialty, so I chose both" I think it's kind of an "old school" thing. The newer generation of physicians, don't practice this way.

Anyway, no, a physician cannot "consult" himself because he practices two different specialties. He would have to use subsequent visits, since you said rounds in the inpatient setting.
