I have one of my doctors who will sometimes do an emergency cath, the pt is usually transfered from another hospital. After he has done the cath, he will follow up with the pt in the ICU, if they are put there. He usually puts down 30 min of icu care. I'm wondering if the follow up in icu is not billable since he has already done the cath, wouldn't that be in the global? Any advise would be wonderful :D

Hi Jammie,

You are correct, the visit following the heart cath is included with the procedure and is considered a global visit. To bill critical care the patient is critically ill, critically injured, or has organ failure. Even though a patient is seen in ICU it does not automatically qualify to bill critical care, POS can be ED, outpt, Inpt.

good luck,
Dolores
