IDDM is no longer an anacronym for type I diabetes, the guidelines stste that neither age or insulin dependence can dictate the diabetes type, if the type is not documented by the physician then the coder must default to the fifth digit of 0.

We would also advise the MD to clarify Type 1 or 2 since you can be insulin dependent as a Type 2 diabetic.
