Hi all,
Patient came in to have neurostimulator and leads removed due to failure of the device to provide relief from back pain. I have tried to find a diagnosis code for a failed relief but everything I am finding is due to a breakdown of some sort of the device, and this is not the case. Any suggestions on an accurate diagnosis code?
 
I think I would use Z45.49 - Encounter for adjustment and management of other implanted nervous system device. The term 'removal' in the alphabetic index directs you here. Since the encounter is directed at the removal of the device and not at the evaluation or treatment of the patient's condition, I believe this code category would be the most appropriate.
