With the influenza scare going on right now, I have been seeing more & more flu like symptoms or flu like illness diagnosis. Does anyone know how these should be coded? I've seen 487.1, influenza given. I have seen 079.89 "other" viral infection. I've seen someone say to code the symptoms......:confused:

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
 
Flu symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, cough, runny nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you have access to the doctor, I'd ask him/her to be more specific with the flu symptoms.

Took a closer look at 487.1 and if the doc says flu like illness you're probably safe using that code. If the doc says flu symptoms, I'd clarify what that means. Coding--it's almost always about hair-splitting.

Didn't they just add new H1N1 codes? I need the illness code for a confirmed swine flu patinet.

H1n1 codes

According to ACOG, effective 10/1/09 use 488.1 for flu identified as H1N1 virus.
