We have a general surgeon that is using the hospital owned portable ultrasound for line placements and FAST scans. Can the hospital charge a technical fee for the machine being used even though the physician is doing the scan, not the technologist.
Thanks

In my opinion, the facility should discuss this with the surgeon to make sure everyone is on the same page. One of my doctors hauls his own EMG machine to the hospital, does both the technical and interpretations, and our claims were processing as paying only the 26 for interp even though we billed as whole component. When we investigated, the facility was also charging these same CPT codes with the TC modifier. After we had a meeting of the minds, the facility stopped billing our CPT codes. In your case, the facility owns the equipment so perhaps the decision makers can figure out how both providers get paid correctly.
