We are starting to offer HPV as the primary ordering test with a reflex to PAP if the HPV is positive. Was wondering on how you would code for the HPV on this scenario.

Patient comes in for a wellness visit. The physician orders the HPV as the primary test. The HPV is positive so it will reflex to the PAP and PAP is negative, but it could be positive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello ShariZ you really need to provide a whole lot more details here to help you. The HPV test is a laboratory test without additional information here that a cytotechnician provided the results.
lt's (not a clinician or pathologist) either or both of their interpretations are necessary here.
HPV was positive for which testing? CPT book has plenty of choices here.
Pap was possibly positive or negative here. Again, who reviewed it and what was the outcome. If you don't understand what I am asking, was it a true doctor, pathologist reviewing the results and providing a final diagnosis? OR was the cytotechnician (NOT a clinician) providing what they saw? What the cytotechnician states is not codable here. That is reserved for pathologist/clinician here. Unless pathologist or clinician reviewed and shared their findings. Please do not be coding diagnosis codes that are not warranted by the cytotechnician but clinician or pathologists instead here.
Thanks,
Dana
