I am wondering if anyone who has taken the exam can tell me, is it the same format as the multiple choice questions that are on the sample exams?

I am also curious if there are a lot of questions about the Laboratory or Nursing Home registries, as we arent allowed to bring those into the exam, and my reference guide does not have chapters regarding these. During my chapter three training there were 3 questions about the lab and nursing home in the final test.

Thanks in advance!

They are all multiple choice. You have to assume the real exam will be like the practice ones. There could be questions like that on there.

The CPCO™ Certification Exam

  • 100 multiple choice questions (proctored)

The CPCO exam is 100 multiple choice questions. The question format would be similar to the AAPC Practice Exams. (The course chapter exam questions could have some similarities to certification exam questions, but they are meant to test your course learning chapter by chapter & aren't necessarily intended to be exactly like the certification exam. However, the Practice Exams are designed to be similar to the actual certification exam.)

You can see the breakdown of questions by section/topic here: https://www.aapc.com/certification/cpco.aspx

That link also includes the list of approved references. There are 3 OIG printouts listed at the above link that are allowed during the exam.

CPCO is not a "reference of choice" exam - the only book allowed is the AAPC Physician Practice Compliance Reference Guide: https://www.aapc.com/medical-coding-books/physician-practice-compliance-reference-guide/
