I am not yet a member of the AAPC and I have a question about the externship program.

I don't need anyone to give exact details of extern sites (which are only available to AAPC members) but I'm wondering whether there are any hospitals in the Sarasota-Bradenton (FL) area that participate.

I'm considering a career change and I am aware that it is very difficult to obtain work as a coder if you only have a certification. I am financially prepared to study (for the CPC and CCS exams) on my own and do an unpaid externship to get into this field. My last job was customer service rep for Blue Cross Blue Shield in New England. I will relocate to Sarasota-Bradenton in a few weeks.
 
Need Advice

Perhaps you could contact the hospitals in the Sarasota-Bradenton area and ask whether they participate in the Extern program. If not, it might be a good way to broach the subject and offer yourself as a free extern.

Just a thought.
