for blood draw--trying to determine if patient has had the chicken pox before administering the varicella vaccine. Our office sends specimen to LAbCorp, but we have to have a ICD9 code for paperwork. Thanks!

There really isn't a perfect match.

I would suggest V73.89 - Special screening examination for viral and chlamydial diseases - Other specified viral diseases - Category is "Persons without reported diagnosis encountered during examination and investigation of individuals and populations".

Another option would be V01.71 - Contact with or exposure to communicable diseases - Other viral diseases - Varicella - Category is "Persons with potential health hazards related to communicable diseases".

Out of these two I favor V73.89. You do not know if the patient had contact/exposure to the varicella, that is why you are testing for it, right;)

Hopefully there will be a few more replies to get a trend.
Hope this helps!
