My understanding of OB is that if a pt is pregnant, there are 3 possibilities with regards to coding encounter.
1. Incidental - condition is not affecting the pregnancy - Office visit code used.
2. Routine antepartum visit - global billing place holder 59400PP is used and Dx Z34.- and Z3A.- are used.
3. Complication of pregnancy - Dx O code + Z3A.- office visit code used NOT global billing code (59400PP)
I'm the newbie of my coding group. Group states to use global billing code (59400PP) with O code.
What are your thoughts?

If the patient is pregnant and has a condition say a sore throat this is still coded with the O code but billed with an office visit level. If the provider documents that the condition is not affecting the pregnancy then you will use the pregnancy incidental Z code as a secondary and bill with an Office level. If the condition is caused by the pregnancy then it is still global.

Debra, thank you for response.

"If the condition is caused by the pregnancy then it is still global."

How then will DOS be coded?

1. Z34.-
2. Z3A.-
3. O code complication.
