Is it true that in 2023 observation codes will no longer be used?

Yes, it is true. Regardless of patient status, starting in 2023 providers will use the current IP initial hospital and appropriate discharge codes.

Observation codes will be deleted. Hospital inpatient codes will be updated to match the format used for office/outpatient visits and include observation. The AMA released the new E/M guidelines in July.
