My question is about billing 88305 in a physicians office.
One of our family practice offices collected a specimen and sent it to the hospital lab to be tested. Now 88305 is on our lab bill from the hospital. My question is: If the hospital is billing us for testing, using CPT code 88305, should our family practice office bill the insurance company 88305 globally?
Any help is greatly appreciated, I have to relay the answer back to my supervisor.
Thanks,
B.Carruth

88305 is for the gross and microscopic examination of a specimen to provide a diagnosis. This is the code the pathologist uses to describe their work value on this specimen. The family practice would bill for the procedure obtaining the specimen. Please see the pathology coding guidelines in CPT.
