Does anyone have insight on when to use place of service 19? The CMS description states "A portion of an off-campus hospital provider based department...".

We are private physician practice and are trying to clarify if POS 19 is for hospital employed physicians only.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

POS 19 is not specific to hospital-employed physicians. But if your physicians are in private practice, you would only use it if they see patients in a hospital's office campus outpatient provider-based department. These would be clinics owned by a hospital but located more than 250 yards from the hospital's main campus. The definition of provider-based is a bit complicated and has some legal grey areas, so if you're not sure whether or not a location is provider-based, it would probably be best to check with the hospital. But chances are, if your providers only see patients in their own office or in the main hospital itself (e.g. inpatient, observation, ER, OR), then most likely this place of service code would not apply to you.
