Need help with understanding the rules for compliance with respect to hospital based out-patient radiology services and the need for updates on orders and or diagnosis codes. We are challenged when providers in the community send patients for out patient radiology services when the prescription/orders are incomplete. Currently, the hospital out-patient staff require the referring provider to fax in a new prescription to complete the order and proceed with scheduling. Many have asked why they can't simply call the referring provide and receive clarification over the phone? According the the general rules of compliance, the radiology center CAN accept order and or diagnosis updates via the telephone, providing it is documented who they spoke with and when, etc. The staff at the hospital state that the rules for out-patient hospital based radiology centers differs from free-standing radiology centers and hence the need to have the referring provider send in a new prescription ... IS THIS TRUE?
