Can anyone tell me how long a practice should keep encounter forms/superbills? I have looked on the CMS website but have not been able to find information relating to the retention of superbills.
Thank you.

Considering they are not part of the medical record, why keep them that long? They do not, in any way, support the level of service billed, nor the diagnosis codes claims on the form--that is supported by the record alone. Are you considering it a financial document? How so?

I agree with Kevin, there is no reason to keep them at all, they in no way support the codes submitted on the claim and cannot be used to support a coding decision.
