Is there a procedure code for removal of a retained umbilical cord? I cannot find one. Dr said he did not do much in the way of an office visit, just removed the cord using silver nitrate sticks. Thanks!

This is a question I received. I answered with:

I find a dx code 779.83 delayed separation of umbilical cord, but I can't find anything to remove it either. The only code for umbilectomy (49250) requires surgery. So, this would just be inclusive to the E/M visit. If he doesn't have enough to do a regular E/M, then you might consider the unlisted E/M code and send whatever documentation you have.

Does anyone have a better answer? The Dr didn't like this one. He thinks there should be a procedure code.

His response:
Dr is not happy with this answer. He says it is a procedure not an E/M.

So, if anyone can help I would appreciate any and all responses. Thanks!
