what is the correct way to code a fu visit for a surgery - in the Global Period.

Is Z98.890 with a 99024 enough or do I need to add the Diagnosis Code for the surgery. Also if in global period and x-ray is done would the X-ray code go after the 99024 or do I code a diagnosis code for the surgery and then the x-ray code.

Any help is appreciated, too many people telling me different things.

Diagnosis codes for a post op visit should be the same codes you used for the surgery (use 7th character D for injuries). You could also use Aftercare Codes. X-rays are not included in the global period and are billed separately. I always use pain dx for the x-ray and then any applicable additional codes (fracture)

If there is a more specific post op code such as Z codes for totals or arthrodesis status, I tend to code with those vs. the general Z98.890. I bill xrays separately as well following the 99024. I do not code for the pain on the xrays. I code with whatever the surgery/global period is for.
