I am getting a denial on cpt code 27222 billed with modifier 80. The denial is for multiple assistants/physicians not covered in this case- however the ortho surgeon and his assistant were there- how can i bill to get this paid.

Just because they were both there unfortunately doesnt mean they have to pay you. You should review the carrier policy for which procedures they will cover an assist. Also the 80 modifier is for another "surgeon" that assists. The most frequently used modifier for a regular assist is AS (for PA's etc) and 81.
