Hello all,

I came across something today that I'm not sure how to go about doing. A provider documented that a patient has both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Of course, category E10 and category E11 codes are excludes 1 so I shouldn't code these together. However, I was wondering is there a way to code both of them together? If not those actual codes then what codes can I use?

If there isn't a code for this I am wondering if it's more appropriate to use type 1 or type 2? When I googled if a patient can have both types, it said that it is possible and that usually the patient starts off with type 1 and then develops insulin resistance giving them type 2. So if that is the case (I'll query provider to confirm), is it more appropriate to only code type 1 diabetes?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, The combination of type 1 and type 2 diabetes also referred to as type 1.5 or double diabetes is reported with a code from category E13 per Coding Clinic.
