We were recently advised that we shouldn't be using a V code as a primary code when coding laboratory services. For example coding 85610 (Protime) we have only been using V58.61. The ICD-9 book states that this is a SDx (Secondary Diagnosis), but I thought that only applied to Office Visits. Any insight into this situation would be appreciated.

We are a family practice and do quite a few Protime checks (CPT 85610). We also use diagnosis code V58.61 which is for "long term (current) use of anticoagulants" and have no problem with the V code. This seems the appropriate code to use because the patient is on the anticoagulant for long term use.

I hope this helps!
