From my understanding you append a Modifier AI if the physician billing for the charges is the same physician that admitted the patient. Can someone please elaborate on this for me. and provide examples if possible. That would really help me put it into perspective.
 
Yes if your provider admits the patient you append the AI modifier to the 99221-99223 code. This indicates that you are the admitting provider. Then if a consult is called, the consulting provider will be able to bill using 99221-99223 as the initial inpatient encounter for the consult. If you do not append the AI modifier the consult will not be paid.
