Hi All,

I have a question which I believe I know the answer to but my physicians want proof. Can a fellow perform capsule endoscopy and hydrogen breath test, without the physician being present? If so, does the physician have to be in the room the entire time? Where can I find any information?

I would start with your LCD/NCD. It will give you all the limitations and who can perform the endoscopy. If your area doesn't have an LCD, then you can always check out other's and get an idea of what other's are doing and it would give you a place to start.

Endoscopy Procedures.--To bill Medicare for endoscopic procedures (excluding endoscopic surgery that follows the surgery policy in subsection a), the teaching physician must be present during the entire viewing. The entire viewing starts at the time of insertion of the endoscope and ends at the time of removal of the endoscope. Viewing of the entire procedure through a monitor in another room does not meet the teaching physician presence requirement.

I read that information but I wasn't sure if it fall under Endoscopy Procedures, since the patient is swallowing a capusle and it is not performed with a endoscope??
