I have a question about the use of icd-10 code O34.21. Our providers are using this diagnosis due to our EMR computer system being set up with synonyms linked to icd-10 codes. When they use the synonym: maternal care for patient with previous c-section, it pulls in code O34.21. I am questioning this use since the ICD-10 coding book lists the description as "maternal care for scar from previous cesarean delivery", which isn't actually what they seeing the patient for. Also, if the provider is treating the scar, payers don't want to reimburse the visit due to it not being medically necessary. If I check a crosswalk from icd-9 to icd-10, the icd-9 for maternal care for previous c-section links to O34.21 too. Has anyone else had any issues with the use of this code and if so, how have you been able to resolve the issue?

It is referencing the uterine scar from the previous csection, which can be a complicating factor and this is the appropriate code. It should not cause any issues.
