Does anyone have any idea how to code "indwelling foley catheter"? In the index there is nothing under "indwelling", nothing under "presence of", nothing under "catheter/catheterization". Arggh. This makes me nuts.

Thanks,

foley

I get 51702 insertion of temporary indwelling bladder catheter; simple, but this is inclusive to a lot of other procedures done at the same time, so beware.

Are you looking for the procedure code or ICD9? There is no code for ICD9 - you have to code the reason why they have a foley - ex. urinary retention.

what about V55.6 (Attention to other artificial opening of urinary tract)??

If there is a problem there are 2 different codes you can use in addition to the problem (ie infection) itself.

996.64 Infection and inflammatory reaction due to internal prosthetic device, implant, and graft Due to indwelling urinary catheter

996.31 Mechanical complication of genitourinary device, implant, and graft Due to urethral [indwelling] catheter

Foley catheter ICD 9 code

For fitting and adjustment of a foley, use V53.6. This includes removal or replacement of the catheter.

Inability to place catheter

Our doctors get called over a lot by the hospital docs for inability to place the catheter during a procedure. Our doctor goes over and usually has no problem placing it.

So the diagnosis is always inability to place catheter. What would you recommend for the diagnosis? The 996.31?

Thanks!!
