When a PA Hospitalist performs a IP/OP consult in the hospital without the MD present. Does the MD Hospitalist have to have a face-to -face visit with the patient and also document elements of the visit in addendum to the PA's consult note that they performed personally? -or- Can the MD just review the PA's note w/discussion and sign off as long as they were available in the facility without any futher documentation?

If you are billing under the MD NPI then the MD must have a face to face with the patient on the same day and document his/her own note and indicate that the PA note was read and either agreed or disagreed with. If the physician does not see the patient and does not have a separate note then the visit must bill out under the PA. Also the PA must be an employee of the MD for a shared encounter.
