I'm having a tough time with this one:

We have a patient that we saw one day on 7/18/2009, he was then transferred to the cardiology service which is in the same hospital.

It was originally billed as an admit.

I understand -- transfers within the same facility do not support billing of a new admit -- so how would I bill this one? Would it be billed as a subsequent?

So your provider didn't admit the patient?

Was it a consult? If not the only option you would have would be subsequent care, unless they did critical care.

I agree with Laura. I would like to think physicians know an admit from an admit and "think" they know a consult from a consult. They tend to steer clear of subsequents. If they marked admit but didn't admit, I would more likely think subsequent because I figure they would mark consult. Either way, it points you in the right direction.

But what IF -- they saw them "outpatient" and then cardiology admitted?

That might be where the confusion lies.
