Clinical Documentation Improvement Programs-Fad or Reality
CDI has become a buzzword within the healthcare RCM domain. Year on year, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs are gaining momentum in the UAE. The core benefits surrounding its success include improved quality, patient safety outcomes as well as increased reimbursement. The premise of CDI is simple: engage clinicians to improve the clinical documentation in the medical record in “real time” so that it is fit for reporting, analysis and reimbursement. Is CDI programs a fad or a much-needed Reality…?

Taming Terminologies, A Data-Knowledge Perspective
One of the main challenges faced by today’s health information management professionals is to cope with myriad of terminology classifications which are changing or evolving. Regardless of where or by whom the codes are captured, be it coders, providers or the machines, HIM always do have high stake on terminologies, quality of codes and how they are used. Taming HIM/coding students and HIM freshers, clinicians or anyone new to classifications is an ever-challenging task; nevertheless, evidence-based approaches by harnessing technologies help the work get done with better outcomes.

In this presentation, we will discuss the terminologies, coding of sepsis with other infectious conditions, coding of sepsis with non-infectious coding, and coding sepsis in pregnant and newborn patients. We will discuss the clinical indicators, documentation requirements and when and how to place a query to the provider for accurate reimbursement.

Integrated Approach, AI & HIM Coders Towards Quality of Care
Healthcare industry is constantly evolving in managing population of health and creating better patient outcomes in a cost-efficient manner using Artificial Intelligence (AI) integrated Population Health Management Solutions and Fraud, Waste and Abuse Solutions. Accurate input data sets is the key towards the success of any AI initiatives. The Insights from HIM domain experts must go hand-in-hand with the analytics in order to prevent false inferences towards quality of care and provider patient engagements. This is a different skill set than traditional coding and coding professionals must prepare themselves for this change by expanding their capabilities to work with new technology as data modellers, validators and develop sharp critical thinking and auditing skills.
