Does anybody know the guidelines for cpt 90846 family psychotherapy without patient present? Does the patient still have to come in, get vitals, etc to be able to bill the insurance or can just the parents come in? I know Medicare requires a face-to-face visit to be able to bill them but I'm unsure with this code.
thanks

RE: "90846 family psychotherapy without pt present"

Greetings,

For this particular code, the patient does not have to be present. This particular code is used when the family of an ESTABLISED patient comes in to discuss the treatment plan, support measures and other topics related to the treatment of the patient. If the visit is not related to treatment, then other coding options must be considered.

Hope this helps!
