GS1 | AI-Driven Payment Policies: What Coders Need to Know About the Next Wave of Payer Decisions | Tony Pistilli, CPC
Payers are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to flag claims, automate downcoding, and even deny payment — all without reviewing the medical record. From Cigna’s AI-assisted coding accuracy policy to UnitedHealthcare’s controversial inpatient denials, these headlines signal a shift in how payment policy is enforced. This session pulls back the curtain on how AI is shaping payer decisions, why certain services are targeted, and what this means for coders on the front lines. With a dual background in actuarial science and medical coding, the presenter will translate the data science driving these tools into practical strategies coders can use to protect revenue and ensure accurate reimbursement.

4A | Analyzing Payer Behavior Through AI in the Medical Record Coding Process | Craig Mills
Automation can eliminate keystroke errors that affect everyday operations. In this session we will dive into areas of the revenue cycle that can be automated, saving you the hassle of tracking down mistakes or waiting until the payer denies your claim to discover the error. The intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and medical record coding presents a unique opportunity to enhance our understanding of payer behaviors and their impact on healthcare delivery. This presentation focuses on how AI technologies can analyze and interpret coding patterns, claims submissions, and payer responses to identify trends and optimize interactions between healthcare providers and payers. We will explore AI-driven analytics that can assess payer behaviors such as approval rates, denial trends, and payment timelines surrounding specific coding practices. By utilizing machine learning algorithms to process large data sets, we aim to uncover insights that can inform strategic coding decisions, improve compliance, and reduce claim rejections. Additionally, we will address the implications of these findings for healthcare providers, emphasizing the importance of aligning coding practices with payer expectations to foster smoother reimbursement processes. Data integration and privacy challenges will also be discussed, along with potential solutions for leveraging AI effectively. Join us to discover AI’s transformative potential in navigating the complexities of the medical coding landscape and payer relationships.

7A | Unbundling the Global Delivery Package | Bridget Toomey, MS, CPC, CPCO, CPB, CPPM, AAPC Fellow
The traditional global obstetric package includes antepartum care, delivery, and postpartum care and is billed as a single bundled service under CPT® guidelines. However, recent shifts in clinical practice have made the traditional global package inadequate. Leaders in the field have pushed the need for reform of the global package for years, without much luck. However, in 2025, the AMA editorial panel finally moved the unbundling of the global package forward. In this session we will discuss the current delivery package codes, compare the current codes to the changes, and discuss strategies for teams to adapt to these new changes.
