Home Health Coding Course

The aging baby boom generation is fueling a 75% increase in the number of adults age 65 and older. By 2034, for the first time in U.S. history, seniors will outnumber children. Upwards of 90% of seniors are choosing to “age in place," in their homes, and with this trend, the demand for home health coders will grow by another 36% over the next ten years.

Coding and reimbursement for home health agencies (HHAs) changed dramatically in January 2020 with the implementation of the Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM) — the case-mix classification system used to place care into payment categories. ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding now factors heavily into the case mix system that sets HHAs’ payment level per patient.

If you’re a medical coder interested in specializing in home health — or a HH coding veteran adjusting to PDGM’s replacement of therapy service thresholds — the Home Health Coding Course will teach you the ins and outs of PDGM, including clinical episode management, OASIS, and ICD-10-CM coding for home health.

Course Objectives

The Home Health Certificate Course lays out the impact of PDGM on home health entities, equipping HHA management, medical coders, and billing staff to receive equitable reimbursement and safeguard their profitability.

  • PDGM — All aspects of Medicare home healthcare are intertwined with the new PDGM. Accurate and complete documentation in patients’ medical records is more critical than ever. This course explores the change from PPS to PDGM and the effects it has on home healthcare coding and reporting. We also discuss the requirements for compliance under the PDGM.
  • ICD-10-CM — Coding and reporting home health under PDGM relies heavily on clinical characteristics. Diagnosis codes are used to report these clinic characteristics and comorbidities. We review ICD-10-CM codes, proper coding guidelines, and show you which ICD-10-CM codes are not acceptable.
  • Clinical Episode Management — While clinical episode management is not a new requirement, it affects PDGM. This course teaches requirements, compliance, and overall good clinical practice that will benefit the patient’s experiences and outcomes.
  • OASIS Assessments — All HHAs participating in Medicare and Medicaid are required to complete Outcome and Assessment Information Set (OASIS) assessments. This course shows you how information from these assessments measure patient outcome and assist in improving home healthcare, as well as how they affect coding and reporting for payment under PDGM.

Final Assessment

  • Final assessment consisting of 35 multiple-choice questions
  • Coding cases from real-world, redacted records
  • Must be completed within 75 minutes
  • 70% passing score required
  • Two exam attempts included with course
