Work toward the bigger picture: From classroom to coding
Maddie Banerjee's journey into medical coding is a testament to lifelong learning and perseverance. Originally from India, she earned postgraduate degrees in English literature and education in the UK before teaching middle school English for a decade. After relocating to the U.S., she faced unexpected barriers to resuming her teaching career, prompting a bold career change at age 50.
Despite having no background in science or healthcare, Maddie pursued an AAPC medical coding course at a local community college. She credits AAPC’s supportive community and mentorship for helping her transition into the field.
After earning her CPC certification in 2019, she secured a role at a county coroner's doctor's office, later moving to Pulmonary Associates of Lancaster. There, she started as an AR specialist, which broadened her understanding of the revenue cycle, eventually positioning her for a coding and auditing role.
Maddie values continuous learning, drawing from her analytical mindset developed through literature and education. Her passion for coding led her to serve as an officer for the Lancaster AAPC chapter, a role she took on to give back to the community that supported her.
She encourages aspiring coders to embrace every opportunity within healthcare, emphasizing that even non-coding roles contribute to the bigger picture of patient care. Looking ahead, she aims to earn her CPMA certification and transition into auditing, reinforcing her belief that AI can assist but not replace human expertise in coding and documentation.
