Join panelists Sandy Giangreco Brown, LisaRae Roper and Julie Chicoine as they review the attorney client privilege process and what requirements must be in place to be able to protect facilities. The discussion will review what is protected and how the general counsel or attorney need to be involved with audits or investigations. Working with Corporate Counsel requires staff to be aware of the engagements which may be performed under the direction of the counsel and to ensure that they follow the appropriate protocol. We will review what needs to be followed and in place to support ACP audits and investigations to keep practices at the least risk possible.

Lisa has extensive experience in business and practice management, workforce development, instructional design, process improvement, coding, compliance, and revenue cycle management. Currently, she is the Coordinator of Allied Health and Safety for Missoula County Public Schools Adult Education Division. She serves as an adjunct instructor for private companies and universities. She owns an independent consulting firm and is a frequent speaker, author, and contributor with nationally recognized organizations and publications.

Julie Chicoine, JD, BSN, CPC, CCE
Julie Chicoine is a legal and regulatory professional currently serving as Director of Compliance, Privacy and Risk Management for Adventist Health Castle in Kailua, Hawaii. Julie's professional experience includes several years advising academic medical centers, both in private practice and as an in-house counsel on matters including compliance, research, employment, risk management and health care reimbursement. Prior to joining Castle, Julie worked abroad as a legal and compliance professional in the Middle East. In addition to the practice of law, Julie is a former registered nurse and is accredited as a Certified Professional Coder and a Certified Compliance Executive. Julie earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Houston Law Center. She also holds a Bachelor of Science and Nursing degree from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston.

Sandy is the Director of Coding & Revenue Integrity at CLA, where she manages and develops relationships with portfolio companies, providers, compliance, and coding staff; provides auditing services; and performs education sessions for both client staff and providers. Brown has more than 35 years of experience in healthcare and medical records management, coding, auditing, and compliance in the hospital, outpatient, and physician settings. She loves presenting and sharing education and continues to teach both nationally and locally in her areas of specialty including ob-gyn, general surgery, cardiology, anesthesia, E/M, oncology, and radiology coding. Brown is a frequent presenter for AAPC, AHIMA, HCCA, and others and she teaches courses for AAPC.

 

Joanne Spethman, CPC

As a Health Information Professional with 30 years of experience, my expertise includes inpatient and professional coding, CDI and HCC auditing. I also provide education and training to coders, clinical documentation improvement specialists and providers regarding compliance with ICD-10-CM and PCS coding guidelines and updates. I have provided individual and group coding support for day to day questions at every company I have worked. Additionally, I am currently a member of the AAPC compliance committee assisting as a subject matter expert with coding questions as well as writing and editing educational content.
