Coding Craniofacial Procedures: A Deep Dive into Craniosynostosis Surgery Webinar

Learn more about this event

Coders will learn about the complex anatomy and the variety of phenotypic presentations of skull deformities due to premature closure of the cranial sutures. This is a problem found in infants during the first year of life and can cause long lasting effects if left unchecked. The variety of complex presentations drive diagnosis coding and determine the type of surgical repair.

This webinar will take a deep dive into each of the craniofacial anomalies associated with the premature closure of cranial sutures in infants. The repairs associated with the defects will be discussed and CPT® coding, modifiers and ICD 10 CM diagnoses will be presented. Co-surgery is often needed to make these corrections, and the session will address best strategies for reimbursement.

Learning Objectives/Agenda

• Gain an Understanding of the Anatomy and Etiology of Craniosynostosis
• Learn the correct assignment of neurological and craniofacial codes for the correction of craniosynostosis
• Attendees will be able to identify the correct type of craniosynostosis and assign the correct ICD-10-CM code
• Provide an understanding for when it is appropriate to use co-surgery versus assistant at surgery modifiers.

Why is this topic important?

As of 2024, the CDC indicated 1 in 2500 live births was diagnosed with craniosynostosis. Pediatric coding topics seldom see the light of day. Due to better diagnostic criteria, this problem is being identified earlier and treated. Craniofacial surgery presents a number of coding challenges that need to be addressed.

Who would benefit from this topic?

• Pediatric Coders
• Surgical coders
• Medical Auditors
• Coding Educators
• Coders Adjudicating claims for Pediatric conditions

What is the presenter's background/expertise on this topic?
