Facility Coding for Emergency Services Webinar

Learn more about this event

This webinar will focus on billing for Emergency Department Services for the facility not the physician. It will address the difference in how levels of service are chosen and why they do not always align, as well as the importance of diagnosis coding to support the emergent nature of the service. There will be discussion the revenue codes and the difference in ‘hard’ vs. ‘soft’ coding and the impact that not all coding is done by coding, focused on the chargemaster. Sample chart notes will be reviewed and discussed for the findings.

Learning Objectives/Agenda

• Understand the levels of service and the methodologies for how they are determined
• Recognize the importance and impact of diagnosis coding
• Understand the impact of revenue codes and the claim
• Capturing procedures and other services performed in the ED
• Risk of medical necessity, not being met

Why is this topic important?

Understanding the difference in ED facility and ED professional billing is necessary in seeing the total picture of the service patients receive. Many payers are starting to pay according to internal proprietary algorithms increasing the volume of ED accounts being downcoded by the payer or denied. The diagnosis code often in an assessment may be more definitive than the nature of the presenting problems but will not support medical necessity of the testing done. Understanding the impact of the chargemaster and need for chargemaster maintenance is crucial to accurate billing.

Who would benefit from this topic?

• ED facility and professional coders
• ED managers and administrators
• ED providers
• OP facility coders
• Auditors

What is the presenter's background/expertise on this topic?

Jennifer has more than 30 years' experience in coding/compliance, certified through AAPC and AHIMA in coding and auditing. She has worked with many ED departments on coding needs and currently works with multiple facilities that provide ED services. She has also audited ED services for compliance and billing for accuracy.
