Welcome to AAPC eBooks, your gateway to knowledge. This brief video will show you how easy it is to open and navigate AAPC's eBooks in the VitalSource Bookshelf.
AAPC's ebooks are not only portable, but they also offer users a host of interactive features that give you quick access to information.
That information is delivered in a customizable interface to suit your individual taste and needs.
AAPC's ebooks also allow users to search for codes or keywords, add highlights and notations to text, bookmark pages, create flashcards for study sessions, and a whole lot more.
Now let's get started.
When you place an order for your ebook and your ebook is ready, you will receive an email with an access code to unlock your new ebook.
Each ebook will have a separate code, and each code is unique to you.
If you order a book that is already available, you will get your code shortly after you complete your purchase.
If you pre order a book, you'll get the code when the ebook is released for that book.
AAPC's ebooks are easily accessible in the VitalSource Bookshelf.
Navigate to the Bookshelf login page on either your desktop computer or by accessing the Bookshelf app on any portable device such as your phone.
Log in to the Bookshelf with your VitalSource account.
Once you have your redemption code email, go to your bookshelf homepage, then simply click the redeem codes button in the right hand bottom portion of your screen.
Enter the redemption code you received in your email.
You can easily add one or multiple redemption codes from this window.
Click the redeem button once you have entered all of your codes, and your new ebook will appear on your bookshelf homepage.
To open your ebook, simply click on its cover. For this demonstration, we will open AAPC's ICD ten Centimeters ebook.
Your ebook will open, showing an interactive table of contents on the left hand side of the screen and the actual contents of your ebook on the right.
Click anywhere within the table of contents to go directly to that content in your ebook.
The sections of the table of contents can be expanded or collapsed by clicking here.
You can also hide the table of contents to make a larger ebook viewing area. Do this by clicking on the icon in the top left hand corner of your screen.
Notice the table of contents gets hidden, and you can click again to bring it back.
While the table of contents is the fastest way to navigate to a specific section of your ebook, there are many other ways to get around. The seek bar at the bottom of the book lets you quickly jump to another place in the book. You can also type in specific page numbers to jump to that exact location within the book. Finally, you can use the left and right arrows at the bottom right corner of your ebook to navigate from section to section.
If at any time you want to mark your place within the book, click on the Bookmark button in the bottom left corner.
We'll show you how to go back and access your Bookmark pages in a little bit.
Now let's explore some powerful tools in Bookshelf that will help you get the most out of your AAPC ebook.
Navigate to the icons in the upper right hand corner of your ebook.
These icons represent tools that will allow you to search the entire book, customize its interface, and keep track of all your notes, highlights, and bookmarked pages.
We'll cover each of these tools in more detail in a bit.
Let's start by clicking on the Reader Preferences tool to customize the viewing options.
From here, you can customize the text size, the font style, the color mode of the background, the margin widths, and even the spacing between lines.
I'll select a medium sized font and adjust the line height just a bit.
There. That's better.
If you don't care for the changes you made, you can easily set the view back to the publisher's original settings with one click.
Now let's learn to highlight text and add a note. When you double click or highlight any word or body of text within your ebook, a window opens that lets you select a highlighter color.
Add a note, copy the text, look up the text in Wikipedia, create a flashcard, or actually start to read your ebook out loud beginning with that specific word or text.
I'm going to navigate to some text I wish to highlight.
I will pick the baby blue highlighter and use it on this important material I want to remember.
Now that the text is highlighted, I can re click to add a note.
This feature also works in reverse.
I can double click on any word and select add note.
Note that my word is automatically highlighted in the last color I used, plus a notes window appears to the right, allowing me to add notes to the highlighted text. I'm going to make myself a note to remember to use an additional code when coding tonsil malignancies.
You can change the color of the highlighting for any text by clicking on the highlighted text and selecting a different color. You can also delete or edit any of your notes.
You can see that the notes I made appear on the right side of my screen. The upper right hand arrow can be used to close the note's margin and expand the viewing screen.
With a fully expanded screen, you will notice that icons appear at each place I have a note.
Simply click any of these notation icons to open the note and go directly to that location in the ebook.
Another feature that comes in handy for students and for anyone studying for an AAPC certification exam or any other type of studying is to use the create flashcard feature.
Double click on any word, phrase, or even an image that you might like to make into a flashcard.
I'm going to create a flashcard that quizzes me on the name of the salivary glands.
Notice that the words do not remain highlighted in the ebook. A new flashcard window opens asking me to name the new deck of flashcards.
I'm going to call this one anatomy.
The flashcard is created and stored in my workbook. We'll talk more about workbook a little later.
The text I selected automatically appears on the front of the flashcard.
I can edit that text if I wish.
Next, I'm going to type some information that I need to remember on the back of the flashcard.
I'll save this for now and add this to the deck later.
Did you know that you can also add images to your flashcards?
Just hover over any image. You will see a small window pop up that shows a magnifier, which opens your image in a larger format, and an add flashcard icon.
Click the flashcard icon to make the image into the front of a new flashcard.
Save your flashcards as you create them. When you are ready to study, just click the Study button and your flashcards will open.
You can choose to review your flashcards in order or shuffle them.
The flashcard feature also keeps track of which flashcards you get correct and which you still need to do a bit more work on.
The last item that you can select after double clicking or highlighting a word is read aloud from here.
This read aloud feature will literally read the book to you starting at the word you selected, highlighting each paragraph as it reads.
The play, rewind, and fast forward tools display at the top of your screen while this feature is active.
There is also a settings button that you can use to adjust the reading speed and to change the reader's voice.
Now let's go back to the upper right hand corner and discuss the other tools that Bookshelf provides to make your ebook work for you.
Clicking on the magnifying glass opens the search window, one of the most powerful tools in your ebook.
From here, you can search the entire ebook, including the index and all of your customized notes for any specific word or phrase.
I'll demonstrate by typing the word salivary into the search bar.
The results contain all the instances of the word salivary in the book, including within the index and any figures, plus any instances of the word salary in my workbook, which is where my personal notes and flashcards are stored.
Notice that each instance of salary is categorized by section.
The search even displays each index entry by letter. I'll collapse the results to get a quicker view of the big picture.
Next, I'll expand only the section that I need. In this case, we'll look at other viral diseases, which is codes b twenty five to b thirty four.
Each instance of salivary is highlighted within its surrounding textual content.
When I click on this instance, it brings me to the exact location within the book.
Now let's screen back to the top of the search results and click on workbook.
Each instance of the word salivary from my notes will appear here.
When I click on any note, I am brought to its exact location in the book.
You can see also that searching for salivary tells us that there was a figure with the word salivary located within the book.
Clicking on figure shows us what was found.
Clicking on the finding brings us right to that figure's location within the book.
Now we'll look at the workbook tool. This tool neatly organizes all of your notes, highlights, and bookmarks by section and page number.
It also houses your flashcards.
This tool is in the upper right corner and appears as if it's a piece of paper with a star on it. Click on the notebook icon to open.
Scroll to see all of your notes and highlights.
Click on any one of your notes or bookmarked pages, and you'll go directly to that place in the book.
You can even export your notes into a PDF if you'd like to print them.
Your flashcards are stored here too, organized by deck, and ready for you to start studying.
Don't forget, the Bookshelf app is available on all your electronic devices, whether it's the desktop app that we've shown you today, or any mobile phone or tablet. And the best part is all your progress, notes, highlights, bookmarks, and flashcards are saved across all platforms.
