Natasha Timberlake's journey into medical coding was shaped by her family's background in the field — both her mother and sister were coders. Initially, she pursued other roles in healthcare, starting in the front office, medical assisting, billing, and accounts receivable. However, after spending years working in various aspects of the revenue cycle, she realized that coding was a critical piece of the puzzle she wanted to master.
Her transition into coding was gradual, sparked by her experience in accounts receivable (AR), where she dealt with denials and coding-related issues. This motivated her to obtain her Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) credentials, allowing her to better understand and address claim processing challenges. Natasha values the interconnected nature of healthcare, emphasizing that coding impacts patient care, provider reimbursement, and overall system efficiency.
Despite initially planning to advance within her existing workplace, she eventually pivoted to the payer side, where she developed a deeper appreciation for the complexities of claim adjudication. She later specialized in oncology and hematology coding, fields she is passionate about. Natasha highlights the importance of networking, continuous learning, and perseverance for aspiring coders, encouraging them to embrace each step of their career path as a building block toward success.
