• Real-world practice: 600 redacted, provider-written medical records spanning simple to complex cases.

• Confidence and breadth: Broad exposure to services/procedures you’ll see on the job; helps you identify specialty strengths and gaps.

• Instant feedback: Answers and rationales show where you’re strong and where to improve.

• New platform upgrade: More user-friendly, web-based, self-paced.

Career impact

• Use your strongest Practicode specialties (e.g., musculoskeletal, neurology) to target early job searches — while still applying broadly.

• Expect employer coding tests; strong Practicode performance often translates to stronger test performance.

Apprentice removal (CPC-A ➜ CPC)

• Completing all 600 cases with a minimum score of 70% removes one year of the “A” (apprentice) designation.

• If you also completed an AAPC-approved course, that may remove another year — together meeting the requirements to remove the “A.”

• Removing the “A” widens job opportunities.

Professional conduct and “netiquette”

• Be polite, respectful, and professional in all communications with Practicode support.

• Do not share cases, answers, rationales, or screenshots outside the platform.

How Practicode mirrors real work

• EMR-like experience: navigating records, abstracting data, entering codes/notes.

• You’ll enter ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and when appropriate, modifiers and units.

• Demographics matter: Use details like patient age and service type to validate code selection.

• A timer displays coding time per case — helpful for awareness, but the priority is completing cases to reach 70%+ and remove the “A.”

Productivity and accuracy: Setting expectations

• Practicode helps you gauge how long a case takes you — useful context for on-the-job expectations.

• Examples (vary by org/specialty/setting):

  • Emergency Department coder: ~20–25 cases/hour (~200/day)

  • Ambulatory Surgical Center coder: ~6–10 cases/hour (~80/day)

• New coders often have reduced productivity targets initially.

• Accuracy standard commonly around 95% (organization sets final goals).

Coding approach and guidelines

• Build clinical acumen (terminology, anatomy, pathophysiology) to interpret documentation correctly.

• In Practicode:

  • Follow official coding guidelines first; Practicode’s case guidelines are applied secondarily.

  • Code only documented, pertinent diagnoses supported by the record.

  • Report all CPT/ICD-10 codes for services rendered.

  • Watch for Excludes notes and other instructions that affect code selection.

  • Do not code external cause codes for operative reports within Practicode.

• If marked incorrect:

  • Read the rationale (and reread if needed).

  • If you still believe your answer is correct, you may submit a post-coded query on that case.

Study habits that work

• Dedicated space: Create an organized, distraction-limited area (home desk, library, etc.).

• Time management: Plan sessions so cases don’t “sneak up” on you — balance life/work with consistent Practicode progress.

• Language fluency: Re-ground yourself in med term, A&P, pharmacology, and disease processes to better understand charts.

Common pitfalls to avoid

• Assuming Practicode will be “easy” — it’s immersive and comprehensive.

• Skimming cases/rationales or ignoring guidelines.

• Working in chaotic environments that undercut focus.

• Cheating — it undermines your learning and the integrity of your credential.

Getting help the right way

• Case-specific questions: Use the post-coded query inside the case (content questions only).

• General assistance: Email the response team at practicode2@aapc.com.

• Coaches guide, but do not give answers — you’re responsible for final code submissions.

Motivation and momentum

• Keep the end goal in mind: remove the “A,” prove proficiency, and become market-ready.

• Surround yourself with encouraging people who support your progress.

• Reach out to the Practicode team if you’re stuck on a case — ask for guidance rather than stalling.

Plan your path: Goals and timeline

• Visualize where you want to be; align goals with your values, interests, and desired direction.

• Set:

  • Short-term goals (up to 2 years)

  • Long-term goals (3–5 years)

• Goals should challenge you and contribute to your career trajectory.
