SUMMARY

Evaluation and Management (E/M) coding remains one of the most frequently reported — and most scrutinized — service categories in healthcare. Although the E/M guidelines provide a standardized framework, documentation practices and risk interpretation can vary significantly across specialties and care settings.

In this 4-hour live workshop, we will explore how E/M guidelines are applied across primary care, surgical
specialties, behavioral health, pain management, and subspecialty medicine. Through cross-specialty
comparisons and case-based analysis, participants will examine Medical Decision Making (MDM), time-based
reporting, risk stratification, split/shared services, and prolonged services.

This interactive session is designed to provide deeper application strategies, clarify common areas of confusion,
and strengthen defensible coding practices across diverse clinical environments.

Learning Objectives/Agenda

  • Compare how E/M guidelines are applied across multiple specialties and care settings
  • Analyze Medical Decision Making (MDM) elements within specialty-specific documentation scenarios
  • Differentiate time-based reporting considerations across clinical environments
  • Identify compliance risks related to inconsistent documentation patterns
  • Evaluate real-world case examples to determine accurate E/M code selection
  • Develop strategies to support provider education and audit defensibility
